For a Successful Central Heat Pump Installation
For a Successful Central Heat Pump Installation
The installation of a central heat pump is crucial. An installation done to standard will maximize the performance of your new unit and extend its lifespan. On the other hand, sloppy work will harm the efficiency and operation of your system.

Another point to consider: by following the instructions and checking with your municipality about the regulations in force for any type of heat pump, you will avoid potential noise problems with your neighbours.
IMPORTANT NOTICE
But before you start, we strongly recommend calling on a specialized contractor. Choose a recognized professional who has the skills and the required licences. This way, you can be sure your central heat pump system will be installed according to the manufacturer’s instructions and that you will be able to have the warranties honoured if needed.
If you are reading this article, you are probably thinking of buying or replacing your central heat pump. Our Buying Guide gives you a wealth of relevant information to help you make an informed decision. It also includes installation information that comes into play.
Ductwork installation
Keep in mind that the installation differs depending on whether it is a wall-mounted or a central heat pump. The wall-mounted heat pump is ductless, while a central heat pump combined with a forced-air heating system must be connected to a ductwork network.
One of the great qualities of a central heat pump is that it delivers warm air to every room, by extracting heat from outside and transferring it inside the house. If yours already has ventilation ducts, the installation or modification will be easier.
Good to know: the target airflow is 50 to 60 litres / second / kW / 12,000 BTU*.
Outdoor unit installation
The outdoor unit of a central heat pump is generally installed on the ground or on the wall. We advise choosing a location sheltered from strong winds and not exposed to the sun.
If you choose a ground installation, the unit must be securely attached to its stand, 12 to 24 inches above the ground. This clearance allows good air circulation and efficient water drainage during defrost periods.
Care should be taken to anchor the stand firmly to the ground for greater stability. This part of the heat pump is attached either to brackets in the concrete foundation or to slabs on the ground. Your outdoor unit can also be installed on an appropriate wall bracket.
Quiet, please
Several factors will affect the noise produced by your unit. Pay attention to the number of decibels when buying your heat pump, but also to where you install the unit. Ideally, choose a location away from windows, bedrooms, rest areas… and your neighbours. Adding anti-vibration pads is also recommended to minimize noise indoors.
The coil
All heat pumps have a coil through which the heat exchange flowing through your ventilation ducts takes place. The installation will therefore include adding a coil to the furnace. Other steps, such as the electrical connection and the initial start-up, are also part of an installation carried out by qualified professionals.
