Every heating system has a heat source and a heat emitter. The heat source is hotter than the air in the space to be heated, to bring it to the desired temperature. The temperature difference between the heat source and the air is called the DELTA T.

The heat emitter is the material that exchanges heat with the air, by convection and radiation. It transmits its energy to heat the air: convector, Convectair, electric radiator, heated floor, electric furnace, unit heater, fan coil, etc. Energy can be carried by different heat transfer fluids: water, forced air and other heat-carrying liquids.

Currently, the most economical heating is the heat pump. This unit transfers the heat produced by the compressor into a heating coil, to release it into the space to be heated using a liquid refrigerant, which has the property of absorbing heat.

Heat pumps can be combined with other means of heating, since they are only effective down to about -15°C. Electric furnaces and convectors are also an excellent means of heating: the cost of electricity is much more stable than that of petroleum products such as fuel oil or natural gas.

Heating has a very significant ecological effect: it accounts for about 20% of the causes of global warming. Heating itself has no direct environmental impact; greenhouse gases are the biggest problem.

Wood heating is the main polluter among the means of heating used: it mainly emits toxic gases such as carbon monoxide, and toxic or carcinogenic compounds such as “PAHs” (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons). Oil or gas heating is also a major environmental problem, because of the constant emissions from combustion. Consider replacing an oil system: it is one of the main sources of pollution.

Good air quality is very important during the heating season, since the windows stay closed so as not to increase your heating costs. The most important thing is to have a good air filtration system.

If you have a furnace with ducts that blow air into your home, the furnace filter cleans the air before distributing it: it traps dust, but also combustion residues from heating appliances, such as carbon monoxide, which is very bad for your health. Never neglect the filters of your equipment: they are the key to good indoor air quality.

A humidifier and an air exchanger can also help a great deal: the air exchanger constantly renews the fresh air, and the humidifier regulates the humidity level in your home.
