The AE-X3M24BU multi-zone outdoor unit heats down to −27 °C. In extreme cold, it keeps most of its output: 21,200 BTU/h at −15 °C and still 14,600 BTU/h at −27 °C, shared among the rooms.
Sharp heat pumps are much more efficient and can operate at colder temperatures than conventional heat pumps. Conventional heat pumps typically lose their significant heating capacity at colder temperatures. In fact, it is generally not recommended to operate them when temperatures drop below -15°C, while SHARP Extreme Cold Certified heat pumps can still provide heat down to -27°C.
The ZHU Series and ZU Series outdoor units are designed to deliver comforting warmth down to -27°C, and the AE-X3M24BU multi-zone outdoor unit still delivers 14,600 BTU/h at -27 °C. SHARP’s “HOT GAS PIPE” system ensures that all condensation holes are free of ice to ensure proper drainage of defrosts without affecting energy efficiency.
Freezing of water in the outdoor unit is often the cause of malfunctions in winter. To prevent such a situation, SHARP has improved the drainage system by providing the outdoor unit’s condensation pan with multiple drainage holes. Plugs to cover these holes are also included with the unit when it is used in a warmer climate where water is drained through a drain pipe.
In order to optimize the defrosting of the outdoor unit, the “PRE-WARM” function increases the indoor temperature a few moments before defrosting. In addition, SHARP uses two defrosting modes. Either: “RAPID DEFROST” or “DEFROST”. These types of defrosting are used on SHARP units installed in Nordic countries. All of these functions ensure optimal unit operation and offer a series of increased performances.

For uniform heat and cool air, SHARP air conditioners and heat pumps take advantage of a phenomenon observed in nature called the “Coanda Effect”. * This effect refers to the tendency of a jet of gas or liquid to be attracted to surrounding surfaces. SHARP air conditioners and heat pumps use this tendency by aiming airflow at the surface of rooms, along walls or ceilings, to more precisely control and direct airflow.
R-32 is a new generation refrigerant that efficiently transports heat with minimal environmental impact. While there are different types of refrigerants, R-32 is the new refrigerant that is currently generating the most interest. Because R-32 transports heat efficiently, it can reduce electricity consumption by up to 10% compared to heat pumps using R-22 refrigerant. Additionally, compared to today’s widely used refrigerants such as R-22 and R-410A, R-32 has a 1/3 lower global warming potential (GWP) and is notable for its low environmental impact.
The device’s 40-minute recirculation cycle propels Plasmacluster ions inside the unit. This prevents and stops the development of mold responsible for certain odors on the surfaces of the air exchanger.
Although heat pumps with “INVERTER” technology operate in “full power” mode, their energy consumption decreases considerably when used in “energy saving” mode. This is possible thanks to the inverter circuit that changes and maintains the room temperature by alternating the compressor between “HIGH” and “LOW” operating modes, instead of turning it on and off completely as do models that do not use an inverter. The inverter model keeps the compressor running and only reduces the air output once the set temperature is reached, thus providing a uniform and comfortable controlled temperature.
A special anti-corrosive coating is applied to the heat exchanger, control panel and other key components of the outdoor unit to extend the product life.
Sharp heat pumps have an inverter compressor and automatically switch to “energy saving” mode when the set temperature is reached. Compared to models that do not use this system, Sharp inverter heat pumps consume less energy and increase their efficiency by using a high-power DC motor for the compressor and outdoor fan as well as a linear pulse expansion valve.

For example, since sparking problems could occur in the internal control box of the indoor unit, SHARP uses 5VA resin, the highest flame-resistance rating available from Underwriters Laboratories (UL). This resin covers all six sides of the box with a protective sheet of metal.

SEER2 measures a heat pump’s seasonal efficiency in cooling, and HSPF2 its efficiency in heating. The higher these numbers, the less electricity the unit uses for the same comfort. The Sharp multi-zone system reaches 24 SEER2 and 11.5 HSPF2. The COP at −15 °C, measured by ENERGY STAR, tells how many units of heat the unit produces in extreme cold for each unit of electricity: from 2.30 to 2.30 for the Sharp multi-zone range. At 2, it delivers twice as much heat as an electric baseboard for the same electricity.
It is Sharp’s own air purification technology: it reproduces the purification process found in nature and acts on mold, allergens and odours, with no chemicals or fragrance. A 40-minute cycle also propels the ions inside the unit to curb mold.
