Air conditioning

Air conditioning is a technique which consists in modifying, controlling and regulating the climatic conditions of a house for reasons of comfort in order to obtain a precise temperature and a suitable humidity level or for technical reasons (medical laboratories, premises of manufacture of electronic components, operating theaters, computer rooms).

The main characteristics modified, controlled or regulated by air conditioning systems are:

Air temperature: change depending on the season.
The humidity level of the treated air: humidification or dehumidification
The dust content of the air: air treatment using filters
Permanent control of internal conditions (regulation)

What is Air Conditioning

There are several types of air conditioners, however, they all work the same. All air conditioning systems have a compressor, which is used to compress the refrigerant to change its form to the state of “vapor” is what is called “hot gas”.

Then, the refrigerant vapor is cooled by a device called the “condenser”. The condenser is used to extract the heat present in the gas to transform it into a liquid (all refrigerants have different boiling point temperatures).

Once transformed into liquid, the refrigerant is conveyed in a “regulator” (the regulator is an electronic or mechanical valve which has as function to create a gas shock, it is called “flash gas” – imagine yourself a bottle of spray -net, inside there is liquid and when you press the trigger, the liquid leaves in evaporating gas. When liquid passes in an orifice as big as a hair, the liquid turns into gas). This is called evaporation. The property of the refrigerant is thus, when the gas is subjected to the pressure of the regulator, the gas evaporates and creates cold in the air conditioning coil which is then extracted by the fan which will cool the space you want to cool. Finally, the refrigerant restarts its cycle thanks to the suction of the compressor (please note that if the system does not leak, the refrigerant is good for life). The important thing for an air conditioning or refrigeration system is to have no leaks and to have a good level of refrigerant otherwise the compressor will heat up and you will have overheating problems with the compressor.

Nowadays, residential air conditioning units are much more protected than before, they are equipped with thermal sensor and electronic probe to detect temperature problems related to the compressor and the refrigerant. However, it is very important to have the air conditioning units installed and checked by certified professionals.

What type of air conditioner is best for my home?

When it comes time to buy an air conditioner, it is often difficult to choose given the multitude of products currently available on the market.

If you choose a central air conditioner (with ventilation duct), without ducts or heat pump, a certified air conditioning contractor can help you determine which type of appliance is best suited to your type of residence and your needs. comfort.

Wall mounted air conditioner

Easy installation, the ductless wall air conditioner is suitable for any type of housing: (condo, bungalow, cottage). No need for air ducts. A single unit can easily air condition the entire living area if it is well positioned.

Ductless Wall-mounted heat pump

Affordable and easy to install, the ductless wall heat pump is the perfect device for homeowners who own a home without a vent system but still want year-round comfort.

Ductless Multi-zone air conditioning system

Increasingly popular, the multi-zone air conditioning system is a wall-mounted heat pump type system composed of a single outdoor condensing unit (compressor) and several indoor units (wall, ceiling or recessed) installed in several rooms of the house to to offer comfort in every room of the house.

Central air conditioning (with ventilation duct)

Very efficient, the central air conditioner allows a uniform temperature in all rooms of the house. However, it requires the installation of air ducts.

Central heat pump (with ventilation duct)

A central heat pump offers year-round comfort: air conditioning in summer and heating in winter. It also requires the installation of a network of air ducts. A high efficiency heat pump can represent significant savings in energy consumption costs.

Window air conditioner

The window air conditioner is a perfect option if you are a tenant or planning to move. Very efficient and silent (depending on certain model), it can be installed in most windows in your home.

Wall-mounted air conditioner

If you live in a place where there is a box in the wall installed during the construction of the house (Sleeve). You can install an air conditioner through the wall. This is designed to give optimal performance during the air conditioning season

Go for quality

When thinking about buying an air conditioner, it is strongly advised to opt for a high quality product. In addition to offering you uniform comfort, these devices have a longer lifespan, in particular thanks to their manufacturing qualities and the availability of parts. They are mostly backed by a manufacturer’s warranty and are available through several retailers.

What is INVERTER technology?

Inverter technology allows the compressor to modulate the operating power of the air conditioner in order to always maintain a stable, uniform and much more precise temperature. This electronic module allows the air conditioner to reach the temperature you want more quickly while keeping it constant. The result is a dramatic reduction in the number of compressor start / stop times, a much more stable ambient temperature, substantial energy savings, and a longer unit life.

What is the lifespan of an air conditioner?

Most ductless wall-mounted air conditioners or central air conditioners have an average lifespan of 15 years or more. However, several factors can be decisive and vary this fact: the quality of the installation and regular maintenance are the best guarantees for an extended service life.

Maintenance of an air conditioner

It is strongly recommended to carry out annual maintenance of air conditioning units: the efficiency, proper functioning and durability of the unit greatly depend on good maintenance.

Where can I install a ductless air conditioner?

Wall mounted air conditioners or ductless wall heat pumps are very easy to install. If you own a condo or a single-family bungalow type house, it is strongly recommended to install the indoor unit in the most central room of the house. In the case of a cottage, the top of the stairwell is often the most suitable location. Appliances should always be installed as close to the ceiling as possible so that the hot air that collects there can be treated.

What is the difference between R-22 and R-410 refrigerants?

The refrigerant HFCF-22 is a product containing a molecule of chlorine and which is harmful for the ozone layer. As of January 1, 2010, it is prohibited to manufacture or import new devices containing this refrigerant in Canada. However, HFCF-22 remains available until 2020 to maintain existing equipment.

The vast majority of manufacturers now use HFC-410A in the manufacture of their residential air conditioning units. This refrigerant has roughly the same effectiveness as R-22, but is considered a more ecological product because it is less damaging to the ozone layer.

What is SEER?

The SEER is the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rate in Air Conditioning (or SEER = Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio), is an energy efficiency measure that assesses the energy consumed by the device compared to the energy produced. The higher the SEER, the more efficient the device. A more efficient appliance consumes less electricity for the same power / capacity.

What is HSPF?

HSPF stands for “Seasonal Heating Performance Factor” and measures the efficiency of the heat pump in the same way as the SEER.

Can I buy a ductless air conditioner and install it myself?

No !

Whether it is a central air conditioner, ductless wall air conditioner or heat pump type, the device must absolutely be installed by a specialist air conditioning contractor who has all the licenses required for this type of installation. Its technical knowledge ensures you an adequate and safe installation, a good lifespan and an optimal functioning of your device.

In addition, no manufacturer will comply with the warranty if the device has not been installed by a certified contractor.
